Two things will probably strike you the first days. The first one is our timetable, especially on eating hours. Lunch is always after two o’clock, and it is the most important meal of the day. Before lunch you can go out to have some «pinchos» (short of sandwich aperitive). Dinner can be very late from nine to eleven, depending on if you are going out or not. You’ll get used to it soon, don’t worry. The other one is the «fiestas» or «jaiak» which you’ll certainly enjoy. During the summer every town has its own festival which will be four, five or more days long, with many activities during the day and a party on the streets every night . You can see the calendar of some of the Jaiak which you can go to.If you like going to the beach, you are lucky, even though weather sometimes doesn’t help. If you surf don’t forget your board.Although you come here to work, you will have the oportunity to go to parties and to the beach. So you will be able to relax after your work at the office. Take it easy and have a good time in the Basque Country.

Work You are coming on a training period to work on big firms in or around Bilbao, they are all very different and so they have little in common. The normal working hours are from 9:00 to 13:30 and in the afternoon from 15:00 to 18:30 but some of the firms only work in the morning during summertime and so their working hours are from 7:30 to 15:00. Yes, I know it`s hard to get up so early but you have the afternoon for yourself and you have six sunny hours to relax in any of the beaches around Bilbao. Work in some of these places is quite relaxed, but instructive at the same time, so we hope you get lucky with that.

Language There are 2 official languages in Bilbao: Euskera (Basque) and Spanish. Almost everybody in Bilbao can speak Spanish, and more or less a half of them can also speak Basque. (In small villages there are more people who can speak Basque). And most of young people can also speak English. Download the tourist dictionary of the Provincial Gobernment of Bizkaia (Euskera-Spanish-English-French).

Funds In Spain it is very common to be paid at the end of the month, so it is important that you bring with you enough money to cover your expenses for the first month. We reccommend you to calculate a minimim amount of 100 € per week. Money or Traveller Cheques can be changed in any of the banks or saving banks which are open from Monday to Saturday in morning office hours.

Cost of Life We enclose a list of basic articles for you to get an idea of how much things cost:

Lunch at Restaurant…………..12 €

Dinner at Restaurant………….15 €

Mc Donalds menu………………5 €

Metro ticket(1)………1.45 €

Bus ticket in Bilbao (1)…….1 €

Cinema(2)…………………….6.8 €

Beer……………………………….2.5 €

Glass of wine……………………1 €

Newspapers………………….1.1 €

Cigarettes…………..2.20 – 2.80 €

1 lt. of milk………………….0.80 €

12 eggs………………………1.2 €

Loaf of bread……………………1 €

Coffee at a café………….. 1.3 €

Postage abroad

Europe…………………………0.53 €

Rest of the World……………0.78 €

(1) You can buy a Creditrans, which is a ticket for almost all the public transports.
